SMD packaging out-contrasts legacy DIP by geometry — less exposed reflective surface per lamp. Step up to black-face 1415 lamps and contrast climbs further. The trade-off: at the same current a black-face lamp is dimmer than a white one, so the power run needs heavier-gauge wire and the build costs more.
