Black mask — 5,000:1
Spraying the module mask with black ink lifts the contrast ratio to about 5,000:1. Blacks stop washing out under ambient light, and colors read closer to true — the difference between a wall that looks like a mirror in daylight and one that disappears into the picture.
SMD vs DIP — and the black-face option
SMD packaging out-contrasts legacy DIP by geometry — less exposed reflective surface per lamp. Step up to black-face 1921/2727 lamps and contrast climbs further. The trade-off: at the same current a black-face lamp is dimmer than a white one, so the power run needs heavier-gauge wire and the build costs more. Grayscale — 8 / 12 / 16-bit
