SMD2727 is the modern answer: three chips in one black lens, wide viewing angles that hold color to the edges of the cone, and smooth mixing that makes motion content look broadcast-grade. DIP — direct-insert — is the traditional answer: three separate lamp legs, a sealed package that shrugs off water and heat, and raw brightness per lamp that SMD still chases.

The trade is angle versus armor. A DIP wall seen head-on at noon is a fortress; seen from an oblique angle, its color shifts and its contrast drops in ways SMD does not. A modern SMD2727 wall holds its image across the full cone but relies on the mask and cabinet for the weather resistance DIP builds into the lamp itself. The mainstream 320×160mm board carries 40×20 pixels on a 1/4 or 1/5 scan — high-refresh and standard tiers of the same driver family — with 30 total ICs handling the whole grid. The 256×128mm long board is the classic: 32×16 pixels on SMD3535, eighteen boards to a 768×768mm cabinet, the format an entire generation of roadside walls was built on. The 320×320mm premium square fills a 960×960mm die-cast cabinet nine at a time on dual front-rear service, and the 480×320mm engineering board — 2,400 dots per board on a 2.0mm high-thermal plate — builds landmark faces nine boards at a time with common-cathode power saving standard.

Which to choose is architecture, not optics — all three produce the identical 15,625-pixel wall. The 320×160mm format brings the widest cabinet menu, the lamp choice and the deepest spare bench. The 256-series boards serve walls whose dimensions follow legacy steel or an older installation that must match board-for-board. One cabinet takes one board format only; mixing formats breaks the pixel grid in ways no control system can repair.

Power and control: the lightest bill, the widest choice

At 15,625 lamps per square meter the wall sips power: roughly 150–250W per square meter on mixed content, peaking near 300–400W on full white — less than half the P4 class. Each cabinet carries one 5V 40A supply from Chuanglian Power, MEAN WELL or G-Energy, so failure domains stay cabinet-sized. DIP builds draw more per lamp than SMD and should be fed accordingly. On a 100㎡ highway face at 200W average, the electricity bill runs about $15–30 a day at commercial tariffs — real money at billboard scale, and the reason brightness scheduling after midnight is standard practice on networked walls.

Control is a two-mode decision, and on this class both modes reach the cloud. Synchronous systems — NovaStar and Colorlight front ends — drive networked billboards in real time from a control room, with VDWALL and RGBlink processors carrying the live-production tier. Asynchronous systems — Huidu and Mooncell players — publish schedules from a cloud server and play for months without a site visit. Mooncell and Huidu both close the price gap on unattended walls; the platform you pick is the platform your whole fleet inherits, so choose once and buy spare receiving cards with the wall.
